What we keep, and why
We keep as little about you as we can. This page explains, in plain words, what happens when you use this website.
Listening
When you press play, your device connects to our radio server. Like every online radio station, the server sees your internet address and the app or browser you're using while you listen. We use this only to count how many people are listening and to keep the station running. We don't use it to work out who you are.
Your volume and sound-quality choices are saved on your own device, so they're the same next time. They never reach us.
Song requests
You choose songs from our own library, so you never type anything in. To stop the same person requesting over and over, our radio server notes the internet address each request came from.
Messages to the studio
When you send us a message we keep:
- your first name,
- your town or area, if you give it,
- what kind of message it is, and your message,
- the show that was on at the time.
We never ask for your surname, address, school, age, phone number or email. If any of those end up in a message, our system tries to remove them before anyone sees it.
A computer checks messages first. Each message is passed to an AI service (Claude, made by Anthropic) which looks for personal details, unkind words, or signs that the sender might be unhappy or unsafe. It then suggests a safe version to read out. The AI does not decide anything on its own: a grown-up at the station reads every message before anything is read out on air.
We delete messages after 30 days. If a message makes us worried about someone's safety, an adult will follow our safeguarding policy, and may keep a note of it for as long as that policy needs.
To stop people flooding the studio with messages, we look at the internet address a message came from. We scramble it straight away, keep the scrambled version for about ten minutes, and never store your address with your message.
Other services this site uses
- The website runs on Microsoft Azure. Messages are stored in Microsoft's UK data centre.
- The text styles (fonts) are loaded from Google Fonts, which sees your internet address when the page loads.
- The weather on our studio screens comes from Open-Meteo. Your browser does not contact them when you visit this website.
We don't use advertising trackers or cookies to follow you around the web.
If you're under 18
You're very welcome to listen, request songs and send us messages. Please just use your first name, and ask a grown-up if you're not sure what's OK to share.
Questions, or want something deleted?
Email studio@therustyhaggis.co.uk. Tell us roughly when you sent a message and the first name you used, and we'll find it and delete it.
