Schools & youth groups
Make a real radio show with your group
We run 1 to 2 workshops a week in Leicester schools and youth spaces. Every group leaves with a show that goes out on air.
What happens in a session
We bring a portable studio: microphones, headphones and a mixing desk. The young people do the rest, with our team alongside them.
- Plan. The group chooses a topic and a running order, and shares out the jobs: presenters, interviewers, a producer and someone on the desk.
- Practise. Microphone technique, talking to time, and how to ask a question that gets a good answer.
- Record. Links, interviews, jingles and adverts, in the group's own words.
- Broadcast. We edit the show with the group. An adult checks it, then it is scheduled on The Rusty Haggis and we send you the time so families can listen.
What young people get out of it
- Speaking and listening, with a real audience
- Teamwork and leadership: someone has to run the show
- Digital and audio skills on professional equipment
- Confidence, and something they made to share at home
What we need from you
- A room with a plug socket and space for a small table
- A member of your staff present throughout
- Signed consent forms for every child whose voice or work will be broadcast. We send these in advance.
Volunteer with us
We are always glad to hear from people who can help run workshops, edit shows or look after the music. Volunteers who work with children go through our safeguarding checks first. Get in touch.
